What is the material that smells 'fuzzy, static-y, warm'? My database could not answer; the forum did in three hours

Somebody on r/DIYfragrance asked for a material that smells warm, fuzzy and static-y, adding that it is like a vanilla bean and an unscented dryer sheet having a baby. Five replies gave five materials within three hours. I put the same question to my own database and it failed: of 169 controlled odour types across the library, not one names a texture, a temperature or a feeling; all 169 name a source or a substance. And the word static appears zero times in any field of 42,225 records. The papers side with the asker, though: a 2022 study predicting crossmodal correspondences from an electronic nose found texture smoothness the strongest of all dimensions at r = 0.82, ahead of colour and of pleasantness. And he had handed over a searchable term without noticing. I also got the Cashmeran row wrong on the first pass; the free-text field carries IFF's own words, powdery velvet nuance.

"Does anyone know the names of materials that give a warm/fuzzy/static scent? It's not heady and sickening like Ambroxan, and it's more than Iso-E Super which can be subtle for some. I'm thinking the woody drydown in Serge Lutens Gris Clair and Memo Paris Palais Bourbon. It's more than just Tonka/amber/cedar. It's like if a vanilla bean and an unscented dryer sheet had a baby."
Five replies within three hours, five materials:
"Cashmeran is often described as warm and like 'tv static'." (hyperfocus1569)
"It could maybe be Cedramber. Its pretty close to Iso E Super, but has an ambergris-cedar note to it" (frioke)
"There also Operanide. Which is warm, musky-mossy fuzzy and subtle gourmand" (Salty-Flounder3840)
"Habanolide is said to have a 'hot iron' smell" (Mauve-Honey)
"i'd also add certain muguet aldehydes such as bourgeonal. For Ozonic, floralozone is great" (Crst80)
I put the same question to my own database. It could not answer.
That failure is worth writing up, because the reason is not that the database is broken.
Not one of the 169 terms names a texture
The database's odor_type field is a controlled vocabulary covering 7,001 materials with 169 distinct values.
The twenty most used:

All 169 answer the same question: what does this smell remind you of.
None answers what it feels like, whether it is hot or cold, whether it is sharp or round.
None of the asker's four words is in there:

The word static appears zero times in every text field of 42,225 records.
But look at the last column. warm appears 324 times in the free-text odour description field.
I ran the whole set of texture and sensation words through, and the result is consistent:

Of seventeen words, only cool and dry made it into the controlled vocabulary, and both double as substance descriptors.
So the texture layer is in this library, and not in small quantity. It simply was not indexed. The people writing records kept using these words; the people building the vocabulary did not collect them.
The papers side with the asker
Up to here it looks as though his way of describing was the problem. Checking the literature reverses it.
Ward and colleagues did something direct in Heliyon in 2022: they used an electronic nose to predict people's crossmodal correspondences from the physicochemical features of odours. Six dimensions, with these correlations:

Texture is the strongest of them. Ahead of colour, ahead of pitch, and far ahead of whether people like the smell.
The dimension the asker reached for (fuzzy, a texture) is the one of these crossmodal dimensions that is most predictable from molecular properties. And "does it smell nice", which is what most people write in an evaluation, is the least predictable.
Spector and Maurer had measured the consistency earlier, in Seeing and Perceiving in 2012: 78 non-synaesthetic adults, 22 odours, colour and shape/texture associations. Every odour was consistently associated with specific colours and/or textures (all p < 0.01).
And they drew a key distinction. The four odours identified accurately (cinnamon, lemon, peppermint, licorice) produced associations that look learned (lemon = yellow). But the 18 odours that were not identified accurately produced equally consistent associations — ginger = black, rough, sharp; lavender = green, white, liquid, sticky.
The texture associations stay stable even for odours nobody can name. So they are not a rehearsal of learned labels.
The conclusion inverts. What is missing is a dimension in my vocabulary, not something in his description.
The database can answer him, using the other word he supplied
The second half of his sentence:
"It's like if a vanilla bean and an unscented dryer sheet had a baby."
dryer, fabric, linen and ironed return 0 in the odour field.
But this library has a matching term: laundered cloth.
26 records carry it in the odour field. Seven have ten or more suppliers:

The last one is the Habanolide that Mauve-Honey suggested. The forum found one; the database can list all seven in that slot.
Habanolide's odour field reads: sweet; musk; waxy; dry; powdery; laundered cloth; metallic; animal.
Mauve-Honey said it smells of a hot iron. The database says laundered cloth and metallic. The same thing, one said as a scene and one as a term.

The Cashmeran row is where I got it wrong on the first pass, so it stays in.
Its odour field is four words: spicy, musk, woody, clean. Nothing overlaps "warm" or "tv static", so I first wrote that it did not match.
Then I read the whole free-text odour description field, which carries IFF's own copy:
"Diffusive, spicy, musk-like odor with strong floral reinforcement. Powdery, velvet nuance. Long lasting."
velvet. One of the 20 records in the library carrying that word, and the closest thing in the record to "fuzzy".
So the correct statement is that Cashmeran's texture description is in the database, one layer down. Not in the controlled odour field; in the free-text one.
(I wrote a separate article on Cashmeran, about its 48-hour substantivity. I did not touch the texture layer there, because I had only read the odour field.)
What is the controlled term for "ozonic"
The asker said ozonic. The vocabulary has no such term, and no ozone either.
What it has is marine, 11 records. Related: ocean(2), seaweed(2), rain(2), fresh(6), clean(6).
Floralozone's odour type is exactly marine, and the first word in its odour field is ozone.
The term exists in the library, in the free-text field rather than the vocabulary. To search by odour type, you have to search marine.
What you can actually do
- Search texture words in the free-text odour description field, not in odour type.
velvetis 20 records against 0;warmis 324 against 0. - Mix two kinds of word into a description: one texture or sensation word, one scene or object word. The two fields take one each.
- "What does it remind you of" searches better in the controlled field. Dryer sheet returns nothing;
laundered clothreturns 26. - To search by odour type you have to use the controlled vocabulary. ozonic →
marine. TV static → no equivalent, so the forum is the only route. - What the forum is good at is exactly what the database is bad at. Crossmodal descriptions were not indexed, and they are stable in human memory. Use both.
- What the database is good at is what the forum cannot give: the complete list. The forum gave one Habanolide; the database gives all seven in the same slot.
What this doesn't establish
- I have not smelled any of them. This is database fields plus two papers.
- "None of the 169 names a texture" is my judgement after reading them all.
waxy,oily,creamyandpowderycan be argued as textures, but they are also substance names. I drew the line. - "Static appears zero times" is string matching across fields. A record using a different phrasing (
TV noise) would be missed. - Ward 2022's r = 0.82 is a correlation between electronic-nose prediction and human ratings, not direct evidence that texture descriptions are more accurate. I did not get the number of participants or odours.
- Spector 2012's 78 subjects were all non-synaesthetic adults, from a single study, with 22 odours they selected.
- Neither paper studied commercial evaluation of perfumery materials; both used laboratory odour stimuli.
- "Match" is my manual comparison of forum adjectives against database fields. It was not blind, and knowing the answer before looking for the correspondence makes agreement easy to overestimate.
- On the Cashmeran row I concluded from the
odorfield alone and missed thevelvetin the free-text field. The correction stays above. I read only theodorfield for the other five as well, so their free-text fields may hold words I did not see. - The list of seventeen words is one I chose. A different list gives a different ratio.
- Operanide not being found means this library does not carry it, not that it does not exist in the market.
