The fragrance wheel you know was built to sell perfume, not to buy materials

The familiar wheel answers 'which perfume is like the one I liked'. If you are buying raw materials you are asking something else: 'what do I buy to make this smell'. Two different questions, and only one of them has a wheel most people have seen.
Every beginner meets the fragrance wheel early. Four families around a circle — floral, amber, woody, fresh — with subfamilies between them. It is genuinely useful, and it is answering a question you may not be asking.
What that wheel was built for
The circular idea goes back to Paul Jellinek's Odour Effects Diagram, published in 1951. The version almost everyone has seen is Michael Edwards', whose classification first appeared in Fragrances of the World, covering 323 fragrances. (Sources put the first edition at 1983 or 1984; we could not settle which.)
It was built for the shop floor. The reliably documented purpose is helping retail staff pair fragrances — putting related families next to each other so an assistant can suggest something close to what a customer already likes. Recommending a substitute when something is out of stock is one obvious use of that; we have not found a source establishing it as the reason the wheel was created, so treat it as an application rather than an origin story.
That purpose shaped what the wheel contains. It arranges finished fragrances — the entries on it are perfumes. And it works well for that: it is still the common language of fragrance retail decades later.
A note on dates. Sources differ. The classification appears in the 1983 first edition of Fragrances of the World, while Wikipedia dates the modern wheel to 1992. Those may describe two different things — a classification and the circular diagram of it — and we have not been able to settle which from primary sources, so we give both.
Why that is the wrong question for a material
If you are making something rather than buying it finished, your question is not which perfume resembles this one. It is:
I want this smell. What do I buy?
The retail wheel cannot answer that, because perfumes are not on your shelf — materials are. A finished fragrance is typically dozens of materials in a ratio. Knowing that it sits in "soft floral" tells you nothing you can weigh out.
This is the gap most beginners fall into. They learn the families, they can place a perfume on the wheel, and they still cannot answer what to order.
A wheel built from materials instead
Our wheel is the same shape used for a different job. The segments are not fragrance families as retail defines them; they are odour types recorded against individual raw materials, and clicking one shows the materials in it.

The larger odour-type groups give a sense of where the density is. These group on the odour-type values as they are stored, without normalising capitalisation:

These two wheels do not compete. One tells you which finished fragrance is like another. The other tells you which materials smell green, and which of those have a supplier at all. If you are learning to make things, the second is the one you need first — and it is the one that does not usually exist.
How to actually use it
Three things it is good for, in the order a beginner meets them:
- Finding materials without knowing their names. This is the real barrier at the start. You know you want something green and sharp; you do not know that the word you are looking for is cis-3-hexenol. Starting from the smell rather than the name skips that.
- Seeing how thin a family is. Some odour types have hundreds of entries, others a handful. That is worth knowing before you build a formula that depends on one.
- Filtering to what has a supplier. Note carefully what that number is not: a supplier record means a company lists the product. It is not a promise of stock, of a quantity you can buy, or of fragrance-grade material — many of the largest catalogues are research chemical suppliers selling grams. Cost and sourcing works through why availability, not price, is the constraint that usually bites.
What a wheel cannot do
A classification is a map, and a map is not the territory:
- Odour type is one word for something that is not one thing. A material described as "woody" may be dry, sweet, damp or smoky. The word narrows your search; it does not describe the smell.
- Position does not predict behaviour in a blend. Two materials in the same segment can behave completely differently once diluted and combined — threshold decides who speaks in a formula far more than family does.
- Nothing here replaces smelling it. The wheel gets you to a shortlist. The shortlist is where the actual work starts.
