Does a scent relax, heal wounds or change behaviour? How to read the evidence

Cedrol, Hedione, sandalwood odorants and myrrh all have striking studies. Four questions keep the headline inside the evidence.
Fragrance research produces irresistible headlines: cedarwood relaxes you, Hedione behaves like a human pheromone, sandalwood heals wounds, and myrrh relieves pain. Each sentence has a traceable connection to a real paper. The trouble lies in the steps between the paper and the headline.
Ask four questions first: who or what was studied, how exposure occurred, what was actually measured, and how far the authors took their conclusion.
Cedrol: autonomic measurements are not sleep quality
In 2003, Dayawansa and colleagues exposed 26 women to cedrol and measured heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and other autonomic variables. It was a human study, and it reported physiological changes.
It did not measure time to fall asleep, waking during the night, or functioning the next day. “Consistent with a relaxed state” stays close to the evidence. “Cedarwood improves sleep” does not.
The common error is replacing a proxy with the outcome people care about. A change in heart rate may support a hypothesis about relaxation, but it is not improved sleep.
Hedione: brain activity is not proof of a pheromone
A 2015 study reported sex-differentiated brain activity during Hedione exposure and discussed the putative human receptor VN1R1. A 2017 behavioural experiment reported a change in reciprocal behaviour.
Both studies are real. “Human pheromone” still demands more: a natural signalling source, a stable receiving mechanism and replicated behavioural effects. A difference on a brain image does not establish a pheromone. One positive behavioural experiment does not settle the effect.
The practical reason to buy Hedione remains its transparent jasmine effect in a formula. The pheromone story belongs in the research history, not in the product claim.
Sandalwood odorants: keratinocytes are not perfumed skin
Busse and colleagues studied the synthetic sandalwood odorant Sandalore and the olfactory receptor OR2AT4 in human keratinocytes. Activating the receptor was associated with cellular processes relevant to wound healing, including proliferation and migration.
The study matters because it shows that olfactory receptors can work outside the nose. It was not a clinical trial of sandalwood perfume on wounds.
“A synthetic sandalwood odorant activated a receptor in keratinocytes under experimental conditions” follows the study. “Sandalwood oil heals wounds” changes the material, dose, exposure route and endpoint.
Myrrh: an isolated sodium current is not analgesia by smelling
Studies of myrrh sesquiterpenes have examined local-anaesthetic, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Some evidence comes from isolated systems and electrophysiological measurements of sodium-current effects.
That can support a mechanistic hypothesis. It cannot show that smelling myrrh causes numbness or that myrrh in perfume relieves pain. Inhalation, skin exposure and pharmacological dosing are different routes. A complex oil is not interchangeable with one purified constituent.
When a material guide needs to end a pharmacology section with “we only make perfume,” the section probably belongs in a separate article. Giving it room makes the limits clearer.
Four fields to fill before repeating a claim

Changing any one field changes the claim. Moving from cells to people, from one molecule to an essential oil, from inhalation to application, or from a proxy to a clinical benefit all require new evidence.
Research can still be written as a good story. The most interesting part is often the boundary itself: what is known, and which experiment has not yet been done.
