Material guide: myrrh — the resin trilogy's close, a bittersweet balsam

CAS 8016-37-3, the essential oil distilled from the oleo-gum resin of Commiphora myrrha: balsamic, dry, spicy, amber, toffee — plus mushroom and metallic, two rare odor terms. Etymology lore traces the name to a Semitic root meaning bitter. The resin trilogy's last stop: labdanum handles the sweet and thick, frankincense the bright, and myrrh handles the bitter. Here, 400 hours is the conventional top value of the source's longevity scale (the vanillin guide covered this). The "mushroom" and "metallic" odor terms are not typos: to our noses there really is a damp earthiness and a cool metallic edge, and that is exactly where myrrh pulls away from the other resins.
A perfumery material, a pharmacology regular
Myrrh appears in both perfumery and pharmacology papers. Researchers have measured larvicidal, antibacterial, antifungal and sodium-current-blocking effects in particular oils or fractions under laboratory conditions. Those results describe specific extracts, concentrations and models; they do not mean smelling or ordinarily using myrrh produces the same effects.

Myrrh and opoponax are two materials from sister species in one genus: myrrh bitter and medicinal, opoponax sweeter, toward honey and balsam. The names differ by a word, the smells by a city block — read the botanical name before ordering — one more round of the names-versus-things lesson for naturals.
When you smell it
- To our noses, the oil opens on dry balsam and spice, lifts a toffee sweetness and a touch of mushroom earthiness in the middle, and leaves a cool metallic edge with a shadow of the medicine cabinet. Of the trilogy it is the most introverted, and the one that rewards the longest smelling.
- The trilogy's closing ritual: line up labdanum, frankincense and myrrh on three blotters — sweet, bright, bitter, the three faces of resin in one look.
- Evaluate at 10% or below; the neat oil is viscous and will tint (practical knowledge).

Buying notes
- Decide bitter or sweet first: myrrh (C. myrrha) is bitter and medicinal, opoponax (the C. erythraea direction) sweet and balsamic.
- Oil versus resinoid follows the same logic as frankincense: oil for formula work, resinoid for thickness and fixation.
