Material guide: jasmine absolute — one flower, two faces: grandiflorum and sambac

The white-floral family's original finally takes the stage. The catalog spells out both species: Jasminum grandiflorum (the perfume tradition) and J. sambac (the tea world), the latter leading with 56 suppliers. The words from chassis in product names are a fossil from the enfleurage era (lore). Two 2026 studies: a four-species volatile comparison aimed at authentication (157 components), and sambac's monthly dynamics — total detected volatiles peak in August, and decanal's name appears among 17 potential key differentiating volatiles.
On the white-floral line, this series has covered benzyl acetate (jasmine's fruity face) and hedione (jasmine's airy face), but never the flower itself. One reason: it has two faces. The perfume tradition's grandiflorum jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) and the tea world's sambac jasmine (J. sambac) are two materials with two CAS numbers on the catalog, and their smells take different roads. 280 hours is a genuine reading rather than the conventional 400 (the vanillin guide covered the convention), and for a flower absolute it is remarkably persistent. The "naphthyl" odor term comes straight from the database field; in plain words it is that faint animalic shadow inside white florals, which lore usually attributes to nitrogen compounds like indole — lovers call it "the real-flower feel," skeptics call it heavy.
Two faces, two CAS numbers
Sambac jasmine's absolute is a separate material on the catalog: CAS 91770-14-8, 56 suppliers, a red-brown cloudy liquid, and a 12-month recommended shelf life (the series' shortest — flower absolutes are delicate, practical knowledge). It is the flower of jasmine tea; to our noses, greener and clearer than grandiflorum. In 2026, Zhang and colleagues tracked its monthly changes:
Jasminum sambac is widely valued for its aroma, yet the monthly dynamics of volatile compounds and the proteomic basis associated with cultivar differences remain unclear. This study investigated monthly changes in volatile compounds in five jasmine cultivars using HS-SPME-GC-MS, and the total content of detected volatile compounds reached its highest level in August. ⋯ OAV analysis identified 17 potential key SDVs distinguishing jasmine cultivars, including methyl anthranilate, benzyl alcohol, and decyl aldehyde.
Detected totals peak in August; our reading is that this lines up with the flowering season's reputation. And the decyl aldehyde on that list is the C-10 lead from the decanal guide, playing a supporting role in jasmine.
Authenticity is a real problem
Jasmine absolute is an expensive natural, and Yassen and colleagues' 2026 work in Scientific Reports is exactly the infrastructure for telling it apart:
The genus Jasminum is a valuable oil-bearing shrub in the Oleaceae family that produces concrete and absolute jasmine scents. ⋯ As an export commodity, it is important to establish effective analytical procedures for authenticating jasmine species and detecting adulterants. In the current investigation, the volatile constituents of the concrete and absolute of four Jasminum species were analyzed using GC-MS ⋯ A total of 157 volatile components were identified ⋯ Unsupervised multivariate data analysis tools, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA), were used to distinguish between the oil complexity within parameters such as species and seasonal variation.
In purchasing language: things all called jasmine absolute shift their compositional profile with species and season, and instruments can catch those differences. For expensive materials, the specification and a trustworthy supplier outweigh saving a few dollars — practical knowledge.

When you smell it
- To our noses, diluted grandiflorum absolute is a sweet, thick white floral with clear jamminess and that faintly animalic shadow underneath; sambac is greener and more transparent, and the nose goes straight to jasmine tea. Smell the two faces side by side once and the white-floral lesson turns three-dimensional.
- Line it up with benzyl acetate and hedione on three strips: the molecule's fruity face, the molecule's airy face, and the absolute's complete edition: smell them side by side once and the gap between molecules and the original becomes much clearer.
- Evaluate at 10% or less (the database's note on the india entry; we follow it for both). Dark absolutes tint — small-batch pale formulas first.
Regulatory
Listed in GRAS, JECFA, FEMA GRAS, and IFRA. These listings do not provide use limits. Jasmine absolutes are complex natural mixtures: check current IFRA Standards and the supplier's specification for skin-bound formulas, and ask the supplier for allergen data. Buy the 12-month-shelf-life sambac in small bottles, replaced often (practical knowledge).
Buying notes
- Pick a face first: the perfume tradition means grandiflorum (from chassis, or egypt/india), the tea-like clarity means sambac. To understand both, buy the smallest bottle of each.
- The budget path: benzyl acetate plus hedione plus a trace of an indole-direction molecule builds a "synthetic jasmine," and comparing it against the absolute is excellent practice.
