Material guide: labdanum — the chypre triangle's last corner, amber's botanical home

CAS 8016-26-0, the resin and absolute of the rockrose Cistus ladanifer: amber, ambergris, old wood, sweetness and a touch of mustiness. The chypre triangle from the oakmoss guide (bergamot, labdanum, oakmoss) is completed here. 58 suppliers, a dark brown solid, 400 hours of longevity (measured at 20% dilution). A 2024 study compared the traditional Zamorean and Andalusian harvesting processes (the latter yields 25-fold more), and a 2025 review mapped the whole plant's value from essential oil to by-products.
The oakmoss guide drew the chypre family's triangle: bergamot handles the opening, oakmoss the foundation, and the remaining corner is this guide. Labdanum is the sticky resin exuded by the Mediterranean rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer — harvest lore says the fiercer the sun, the more it flows, and our hands came away amber-sweet and sticky after brushing the leaves. In perfumery lore it is at once the traditional core of the amber accord and one of the oldest botanical sources for the ambergris direction.

Here, 400 hours is the conventional top value of the source's longevity scale (the vanillin guide covered this), and like oakmoss this reading was taken at 20% dilution. The dark solid gets the usual three-step treatment: warm water bath, dilute first, expect tinting.
One shrub, two sets of names
Search our catalog for labdanum and for cistus and you find different avatars of the same plant — routine for naturals, and a variant of the names-versus-things lesson. In 2025, Gago and colleagues reviewed the whole plant:
Cistus ladanifer L., commonly known as gum rockrose, is a Mediterranean shrub of growing interest due to its valuable essential oils (EOs) and labdanum resin. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the chemical composition and biological activities of EOs and hydrolates from C. ladanifer across Mediterranean regions, with particular emphasis on Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and France. α-Pinene, viridiflorol, and camphene were found to be the major constituents in the EOs, with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. ⋯ By-products from EO distillation, including lignocellulosic residues, the extraction of phenolic-rich compounds, and hydrolates, have shown potential for value-added applications.
Note the two production lines: distilling twigs and leaves gives the essential oil (the catalog's cistus oil direction), while extracting the resin gives labdanum absolute (the amber direction). One plant, two products; to our noses they differ widely — the oil sharper and more herbal, the absolute sweet and thick.
Harvesting as craft
In 2024, Frazão and colleagues compared the two traditional harvesting processes in Molecules:
Labdanum resin or "gum" can be obtained from Cistus ladanifer L. by two different extraction methods: the Zamorean and the Andalusian processes. Although its main use is in the fragrance and perfumery sectors, ethnobotanical reports describe its use for medicinal purposes in managing hyperglycemia and mental illnesses. ⋯ In this work, it was found that the yield of labdanum resin extracted by the Andalusian process was 25-fold higher than the Zamorean one. ⋯ the different extracts presented distinct chemical profile. ⋯ However, toxic side-effects must also be addressed when using these products by ingestion, as done traditionally.
A 25-fold yield gap and distinct chemical profiles, in purchasing language: the origin and process fields on a specification deserve a close read — same-named labdanum can be a different thing. The closing toxicity caution stays as the authors wrote it; folk ingestion is outside this blog's scope. We only make things that smell good.

The table is the two-names evidence: labdanum and cistus each take half the rows, and beginners often search only one side. The ambroxan connection belongs here too: ambroxan is made industrially from clary sage's sclareol, not from labdanum, but both sit in the labdane diterpene family — chemical cousins whose ambergris-direction smell runs in the family (lore).
When you smell it
- To our noses, the diluted absolute opens on amber and honey sweetness, moves to old wood and leather dryness, and leaves a musty, animalic tail. It is one of the series' materials that carries a story all by itself.
- To understand chypre, line up three blotters — bergamot, labdanum, oakmoss: bright, sweet, dark, the whole triangle at once.
- To understand amber, layer it with vanillin: lore's most classic amber skeleton is the combination of these two families.
Regulatory
Listed in GRAS, JECFA, FEMA GRAS, and IFRA. These listings do not provide use limits. Natural resin composition drifts with origin, process and batch, so check current IFRA Standards and the supplier's specification for skin-bound formulas. As for folk ingestion, the literature above drew its own warning line — leave it alone.
Buying notes
- Decide which side you want first: labdanum absolute for the sweet, thick amber; cistus oil for the sharp herbal side. The two smell very different — don't guess from the names.
- Give the solid absolute the usual three-step treatment: warm bath, 10% dilution, tint protection.
- Read the origin and process fields on the specification; with the 25-fold yield story above, we suspect process and yield are among the reasons same-named materials differ in price.
