Material guide: bergamot — how one oil bridges a cologne from top to heart

Bergamot combines citrus, floral, green and spicy facets, letting a cologne move from a bright opening into its floral heart. The catalogue includes whole, bergapten-reduced, terpeneless and reconstructed grades.
The first ten materials put bergamot first. This guide takes it apart: why it is the backbone of cologne, the molecular mechanism behind phototoxicity, and what that catalogue row of FCF, bergaptene-reduced and terpeneless is actually selling.
What matters
- Bergamot is the star of cologne: one material with citrus brightness, floral roundness and a touch of green and spice.
- Phototoxic risk comes from furocoumarins in the peel oil, with bergapten as an important component. For skin formulas, choose an FCF or bergapten-reduced grade and check the supplier specification and current IFRA Standards.
- Blotter evaluation and diffusion do not involve illuminated skin, so the whole oil can be used for those purposes. The exposure route changes the safety question.

Why it is the backbone of cologne
Bergamot has three characters at once: citrus brightness, floral roundness, and a touch of green and spice. Our descriptor record (citrus, floral, green, spicy, orange peel, ginger) is the inventory of that compound personality. A single material carrying its own bridge from top to heart is something lemon and sweet orange cannot do, and it is why bergamot has run from seventeenth-century cologne formulae to today.

Phototoxicity: pinned to the molecule in 1977
Bergamot oil’s phototoxicity is associated with furocoumarins including bergapten and requires ultraviolet exposure. It is not allergy, and vehicle, dose, skin site and the interval before irradiation all alter the result.
But "bergamot" is not one uniform thing

Three buying points:
- Going on skin, use a reduced/FCF grade and read the furocoumarin line on the specification. Kejlová's result makes "whole natural oil" a per-supplier, per-bottle factual question; the label alone will not settle it.
- Strips and diffusion only? Whole oil is fine. Phototoxicity needs skin contact plus sunlight, and neither applies. My own first bergamot was the whole oil; it lived on test strips, got used to the last drop, and never gave me trouble.
- Terpeneless solves a solubility-and-stability problem, so don't reach for it as a stand-in for FCF.
Regulatory
Listed on GRAS, JECFA, CoE, FEMA GRAS, IFRA. As always: registers carry no limit values. IFRA's treatment of furocoumarin-containing citrus oils works on the finished product, and the exposure is summed across all such oils in the formula. Lemon, lime and petitgrain sitting next to bergamot must pass the current IFRA Standards together, not one by one.
