Why citrus oils can be phototoxic: the problem is not simply ‘bergamot’

Bergamot phototoxicity requires furocoumarins and ultraviolet exposure. Whole, bergapten-reduced and batch-variable oils are not interchangeable.
A phototoxic reaction to bergamot requires three conditions: ultraviolet-absorbing furocoumarins, sufficient exposure and subsequent light. Whole oil, bergapten-reduced oil and batches with different compositions therefore carry different risks. Stating the conditions tells a formulator which specification to inspect.
Phototoxicity is not allergy
Allergy requires prior immune sensitisation; phototoxicity does not. Furocoumarins absorb ultraviolet light and can damage skin on a first exposure. Calling both “sensitivity” hides the useful distinction: one depends on immune history, while the other depends on composition, dose and illumination.
In 1977, Zaynoun and colleagues tied bergamot oil’s phototoxic activity to bergapten. They also found that vehicle, ethanol concentration, skin site, the interval between application and irradiation, and skin condition all changed the reaction. The same nominal concentration does not guarantee the same outcome.
Four oils with one name gave different results
In 2007, Kejlová and colleagues obtained bergamot oils from four suppliers and examined them with spectroscopic, chemical, cellular and confirmatory human-patch methods. Only two of the four samples showed photoactivation potential, and the cellular classification also depended on solvent.
The useful question is therefore not merely “is bergamot phototoxic?” It is “how much relevant furocoumarin is in this oil, and how was it processed?” This is batch variation with a safety consequence.
What FCF and bergapten-reduced mean
Supplier catalogues use FCF, bergapten reduced and furocoumarin reduced for processed products in which the compounds of phototoxic concern have been lowered. The fruit has not changed, and the label does not erase every safety consideration.
Before purchase, confirm the botanical source, extraction method, reduction status and the supplier’s compositional or compliance statement. Then check the current IFRA Standards for the finished-product category. A rinse-off product, a leave-on product and exposed skin are not one use case.
