Why fragrance-material names mislead: trade names, plants, nicknames and CAS

Hedione can disappear from a catalogue, cedarwood may not be cedar, and aldehyde C-14 is not an aldehyde. A practical guide to material names.
Fragrance-material names are not a clean chemical taxonomy. They accumulated through botany, early perfumery, registered products, supplier catalogues and systematic chemistry. One molecule may have three familiar names, while different materials can share one vague label.
The result is practical confusion. A material you know may appear impossible to find, or two products that sound identical may smell nothing alike.
A trade name is not a chemical name
Hedione is a Firmenich trade name widely used for methyl dihydrojasmonate. A catalogue organised under chemical names may not return it when you search for Hedione. Products with different grades or isomer distributions can add another layer beneath the familiar trade name.
Iso E Super has the same problem. The market uses IFF's trade name, scientific papers often use OTNE, and catalogues may list octahydro-tetramethyl-naphthalenyl-ethanone or another systematic variant. The entries look unrelated while pointing to the same principal chemical identity.
Trade names are memorable, but they belong to products and companies. For cross-supplier searching, find the generic chemical name and CAS first, then compare product specifications.
A plant name does not guarantee a plant source
Heliotropin was named for its resemblance to heliotrope flower odour. Researchers later analysed the flowers and did not find the named molecule playing the expected role. Its other common name is piperonal, which carries no claim of heliotrope origin.
Cedarwood is more complicated. The fragrance trade uses the name for material from Juniperus virginiana and Juniperus ashei as well as true cedars in the genus Cedrus. One market label covers different genera, compositions and odour profiles.
A plant name may describe origin, odour direction or historical market convention. For a natural material, read the botanical name, plant part, origin and extraction method together.
A numbered nickname can describe the wrong structure
“Aldehyde C-14” is gamma-undecalactone, a lactone rather than an aldehyde. C-18 has a similar historical naming problem. The terms remain useful in the trade even though the chemical class is wrong.
Names such as aldehyde C-10, C-11 and C-12 more often do refer to related fatty aldehydes. A pattern appears reliable and then changes its rule at C-14. Guessing structure from the nickname is unsafe.
“Banana oil” creates a different ambiguity. Isoamyl acetate does smell of banana and solvent, which helped generate the name. Commercial banana-oil or banana-water products can be solvent blends rather than pure isoamyl acetate.
One name may cover a family of products
Natural materials are especially prone to this. Jasmine absolute may mean Jasminum grandiflorum or J. sambac. Frankincense covers several Boswellia species. Sandalwood may mean Santalum album, another Santalum species or a synthetic sandalwood odorant.
CAS helps, but a CAS for a complex natural extract may identify a category rather than guarantee identical composition across origins and processes. Specifications, chromatographic data and retained samples can matter more than one number.
A safer search and purchasing order
Collect synonyms first: trade name, generic name, systematic name and botanical name. Use CAS to separate clearly different single molecules. Then read the specification for isomer ratio, purity, source and process. For naturals, add species, plant part, origin and batch.

A useful purchasing record does not stop at the name on the invoice. Record supplier, product name, CAS, specification version and batch. The name helps find the material; the documents identify what arrived.
