Material guide: patchouli — the distance from musty earth to a clean woody base is one dilution

148 suppliers, top-of-scale substantivity, a 36-month shelf life — patchouli is one of the most durable natural base materials. Under the single name live two chemotypes (PA-type and PO-type), and the molecule perfumery wants, patchoulol, is important enough that yeast has been engineered to make it. The most acquired taste among the starter ten.
Neat patchouli often makes a first-time smeller lean back: damp earth, wet wood and a cool herbal edge. Dilute the same material to 10% and the wood becomes cleaner, while the spice and mint-like edge are easier to separate. This guide is about the distance concentration creates between those two impressions.
What matters
- Neat patchouli smells like musty earth. Diluted to 10% it turns into a clean, warm woody base. Dilute first, then judge; don't sentence it at the bottle neck.

Plain reading: CAS is the material's ID number. A gravity near 1 means it is "heavy" compared with most oils. The "400 hours" is the top-of-scale convention in this database's substantivity field (the storage article explains); read it as an extremely long-lasting base. And 36 months of shelf life is long for a natural: the citrus family gets 12 months (same article), so patchouli sits at the durable end.
What it is
Patchouli oil is distilled from the leaves of Pogostemon cablin, and the odour is dominated by patchoulol (patchouli alcohol), a sesquiterpene alcohol, one size bigger than monoterpenes like linalool (plainly: bigger molecules tend not to fly away, which is why this one hangs around in the base).
More than one thing lives under the name "patchouli", though. In 2023 Zhang and colleagues compared the two chemotypes cultivated in China in PLoS One:
In China, patchouli is typically categorized into two types: patchoulol-type (PA-type) and pogostone-type (PO-type). […] In PA-type the content of patchouli alcohol is much higher than pogostone; in PO-type the patchouli alcohol content in stems and leaves is equal to or less than that of pogostone.
One plant name, two chemistries. The batch variation article's conclusion strikes again: read the composition line on the specification before the name. Perfumery wants the patchoulol-dominant oil.
Important enough to engineer yeast for
How much does patchoulol matter? Enough that synthetic biology treats it as a target molecule.
In 2022 Tao and colleagues, writing in Biotechnology Letters, placed patchoulol synthase inside yeast mitochondria. Production rose 2.71-fold over the control strain and reached 19.24 mg/L with fused enzymes and pathway optimisation.
The takeaway for a beginner is not the numbers, it's the recurring pattern: sandalwood (the cost article), vanillin (the previous guide), now patchouli. When a natural molecule matters enough, the industry builds it a route that does not depend on farmland. The patchouli you buy today is still almost always distilled oil, but the natural/synthetic border is moving inside these laboratories.

Smelling it

"Minty" surprises people. Fresh patchouli oil really does carry a cool edge, and stacked on "old wood" and "earthy" it makes the material's peculiar three-dimensionality.
Practical points:
- Dilute before judging. Neat, the musty earth swamps everything (the dilution article's classic case is exactly this material). Start at 10%, and drop to 1% if it still shouts. My own first bottle nearly went in the bin before I thought to dilute it; we get along fine now.
- Substantivity at the top of the scale. It outlasts your evaluation cycle on the strip, one of the "last ones standing" from the fixation article. The flip side: what your formula smells like after hour eight is, in large part, this.
- Use less than you think. In a formula 1–3% usually lays the woody floor; beyond that it turns vintage head-shop.
- It darkens pale formulae. Standard oil is deep brown, so if colour matters, look for the decolorized grade.

Listed on GRAS, JECFA, CoE, FEMA GRAS, IFRA. As always, registers carry no limit values. Patchouli is regulatorily uncomplicated, with no bergamot-style phototoxicity; for skin formulae, consult the current IFRA Standards and the supplier's specification.
Buying it
- Pick the grade. Standard, decolorized, or molecular distilled: the price spread is real, so decide first whether you want the colour and the funk.
- Check the chemotype. The patchoulol percentage on the specification beats any tale about terroir.
- Buy small. Low dose plus long shelf life means 30 mL lasts a very long time.
