Material guide: vetiver — a riddle hidden in a grass root, solved in 2021

CAS 8016-96-4, an essential oil distilled from the roots of a grass; the paper's abstract claims it appears in over a third of all fragrances. A mixture of hundreds of molecules whose signature odorant stayed unresolved for a long time: in 2021 the List and Kraft team proved by an eleven-step synthesis that the smelling principle is (+)-2-epi-ziza-6(13)-en-3-one, with a threshold of 29 picograms per liter of air. 43 suppliers, 400 hours measured neat, a catalog family with origins written into product names, plus two derivatives: vetiveryl acetate and vetiverol.
Vetiver is a grass, and what perfumery wants is the part buried in the dirt: the roots, washed, dried and distilled into a viscous yellow-brown oil. Earth, wood, roots, a little amber sweetness. After generations of use, the answer to which molecule carries its signature smell only arrived in 2021.

Here, 400 hours is the ceiling of the source's scale (the vanillin guide covered this), and this reading was taken neat. The 24-month shelf life is on the short side for this series; essential oils change as they age, so small bottles replaced often is standard practice. It pours slowly enough that, as with galaxolide, making a dilution first saves real effort.
A long-standing riddle, solved in eleven steps
In 2021, List, Kraft and colleagues published a paper in Angewandte Chemie whose title alone is dramatic — "The Smelling Principle of Vetiver Oil, Unveiled by Chemical Synthesis":
Vetiver oil, produced on a multiton-scale from the roots of vetiver grass, is one of the finest and most popular perfumery materials, appearing in over a third of all fragrances. It is a complex mixture of hundreds of molecules and the specific odorant, responsible for its characteristic suave and sweet transparent, woody-ambery smell, has remained a mystery until today. Herein, we prove by an eleven-step chemical synthesis ⋯ that (+)-2-epi-ziza-6(13)-en-3-one is the active smelling principle of vetiver oil. Its olfactory evaluation reveals a remarkable odor threshold of 29 picograms per liter air, responsible for the special sensuous aura it lends to perfumes and the quasi-pheromone-like effect it has on perfumers and consumers alike.
"Finest and most popular" and "over a third" are the abstract's own claims; we quote them as written. What 29 picograms means: a picogram is a trillionth of a gram, so this molecule registers on the nose at extraordinarily low air concentrations. Among hundreds of molecules, the one carrying the signature is the one with the vanishingly low threshold. Our reading: this also helps explain why vetiver oils from different origins and batches smell noticeably different — shift the proportion of the key molecule slightly and the whole impression moves.
Laboratory activity is not a product claim
A 2017 review observed some antimicrobial activity under laboratory conditions while stating that vetiver had not shown a particularly notable new cosmetic value beyond fragrance. That case now sits in How to read fragrance-safety studies; this guide returns to the key odorant confirmed in 2021.

Writing origins straight into product names is normal for natural oils and very unlike single synthetics: one CAS, with Haiti, India and Bourbon each getting a row, differing in price and smell. The 357 and 341 hours are rare non-ceiling numbers in this series — like ethylene brassylate's 208, they look genuinely measured.
When you smell it
- To our noses, the neat oil opens on wet earth and tree roots with a touch of smoke and grain; diluted to 10% or below, the amber sweetness surfaces and it becomes far more presentable. At 10% or below it reads clearly for evaluation.
- We left a blotter in a notebook for two months; the earthiness had faded and the sweet woodiness was still there. The 400-hour ceiling is easy to believe on this one.
- To understand the derivatives, smell it beside vetiveryl acetate: to our noses the acetate is cleaner, powdery, leaning toward sandalwood — a "polished edition" contrast.
Regulatory
Listed in GRAS, JECFA, CoE, and IFRA. These listings do not provide use limits. Natural oil composition drifts with origin and batch, so check current IFRA Standards and the supplier's specification for skin-bound formulas, and, as general care advice, oxidized essential oils are harsher on skin — keep long-opened bottles away from skin products.
Buying notes
- Start with a small bottle of the oil itself (any origin), plus vetiveryl acetate as the control; two bottles teach the whole "natural complexity versus single-molecule cleanness" lesson.
- It pours slowly, so make a 10% dilution before formula work; with a 24-month shelf life on the short side, buy small and replace often.
- Origin differences are an advanced topic: get familiar with one first, then compare Haiti against Bourbon. That beats collecting them all on day one.
