Material guide: angelica root oil — the odour field says musk and ambrette, and the main constituents are three monoterpenes

CAS 8015-64-3, 46 suppliers, FEMA 2088. Its odour field carries eleven words, among them ambrette and musk. But Aćimović's 2017 analysis reports that the roots contain 0.10% essential oil, with α-pinene at 29.7%, δ-3-carene at 14.2% and a β-phellandrene/limonene mixture at 13.2%. All three are monoterpenes, and none of them is a musk. That also explains an odd pair of fields: the odour type is amber while substantivity is only 31 hours. The same record's notes field says "this oil should not be used anywhere on the body because of its phototoxic effects", and the GHS field gives it skin sensitisation Category 1.

The odour field says musk; the main constituents are not
Eleven words in the odour field, and two of them stand out: ambrette and musk.
The database supports that association elsewhere too — the occurrence field on ω-pentadecalactone (exaltolide) reads angelica root. A macrocyclic musk growing in the root of an Apiaceae plant is the spine of that article.
But it is not a main constituent.
Aćimović and colleagues hydrodistilled roots of wild Angelica archangelica from Mt. Ozren in Serbia and ran GC-MS, publishing in Natural Product Communications in 2017:

The top three total 57.1%, and all of them are monoterpenes. None is a musk.
So those two musk descriptors come from the remaining minority — and macrocyclic lactones are typically trace-level in an essential oil.
(The finest demonstration of "the main constituent is not the main odour" is galbanum, whose bulk is terpenes while its green quality comes from sulfur compounds present at very low levels. Angelica root is another version of the same story.)
It also explains that 31 hours
The odour type is amber, and substantivity is 31 hours.
Amber-type materials in this series usually run to hundreds of hours — labdanum, ambrein and ambroxan are all at 400. Thirty-one hours looks out of place.
Add the composition and it fits. An oil that is 57% monoterpenes should evaporate quickly. α-Pinene, carene and limonene are all top-note-tier molecules.
It smells in an amber and musk direction while behaving like a top-to-middle oil. Those are not contradictory; the fields just do not connect them.
That instruction in the notes field
The first line of the notes field:
"This oil should not be used anywhere on the body because of its phototoxic effects."
Angelica is Apiaceae, alongside celery, parsnip and ammi — a family known for furocoumarins, molecules that absorb UVA and then react with DNA in skin. The citrus line is Why citrus oils are phototoxic; angelica is the non-citrus case.
Forty-six records in the database carry that instruction, split between phototoxicity and sensitisation, and the list is in a separate article. Angelica root oil is the third best-supplied entry in the phototoxic group.
The absolute from the same plant (1 supplier) carries the same sentence, and its odour type is musk (pungent, herbal, musk) — one plant, an amber oil and a musk absolute. Another instance of the same-CAS odour-type disagreement measured last round.
The GHS field is not empty, and it includes sensitisation Category 1

Category 1. Sixty-three records in the database carry skin sensitisation in the GHS field, and that group includes materials in daily use — geraniol (198 suppliers), citral (135), citronellol (119), eugenol (97).
So carrying a sensitisation classification does not mean unusable; it is a question of dose and concentration. But angelica root oil carries the phototoxicity note as well, so two reasons stack.
De Groot and Schmidt's 2016 introduction in Dermatitis gives the overall scale: contact allergy has been described for 80 essential oils. They also flag a structural problem — composition data for essential oils appears in journals the dermatological community does not read, so the clinical and chemical sides do not see each other's data.
Flash point 43 °C
Flash point 43.33 °C, which is a meaningful line for shipping. Oils high in monoterpenes have low flash points, and that governs whether and how you can send them — the rules are in Shipping a flammable liquid.
The storage field says cool, dry, tightly sealed, protected from heat and light; shelf life 24 months.
How to use it
- Not in leave-on products. The notes field says so, and the reason is phototoxicity.
- It is a top-to-middle oil, not a fixative. Thirty-one hours; do not be misled by the amber odour type.
- The celery and weedy direction is real. The odour field carries celery, weedy and vegetable, and the taste description reads "at 25.00 ppm. Green, herbal, ambrette and musk-like with vegetative, spicy nuances".
- Do not rely on it for a musk effect. ω-pentadecalactone is the molecule itself, and in this oil it is present at trace level.
- Flash point 43 °C — check before shipping.
- The absolute from the same plant is a different material (odour type musk, 1 supplier) and is not interchangeable.
What this doesn't establish
- I have not smelled it. The whole article is fields, database-wide counts and two papers.
- Aćimović's team measured one batch of wild Serbian roots. Origin, wild versus cultivated and harvest timing all move the proportions, and most commercial angelica root oil comes from cultivation in Belgium, Holland, France, Germany, Hungary and India (as the notes field itself lists). One analysis is not a general rule for the material.
- "The musk descriptors come from trace constituents" is an inference. Aćimović reports only the main constituents and gives no figure for macrocyclic lactones, and I found no quantification of ω-pentadecalactone in angelica root oil.
- "31 hours because of the monoterpenes" joins two sources — substantivity from a database field, composition from a paper, and they are not the same oil.
- The phototoxicity mechanism paragraph is a general statement about Apiaceae. I did not look up furocoumarin quantification for this oil.
- GHS classifications are supplier-declared, may differ between suppliers, and this field covers only 0.9% of the database.
- I did not check the current IFRA standard for this oil.
